Coastal flooding and Storm Surges: Heavy rainfall, compounded by strong winds and tidal surges, can induce coastal flooding. Those residing near coastal regions such as Eastern NC must maintain heightened readiness, given the perpetual flood risks associated with these areas. Surf City, Topsail Island and portions of Wilmington are particularly vulnerable to coastal flooding.

Driven by intense winds, surging waves, and fluctuations in atmospheric pressure, storm surges wield significant destructive potential, manifesting in exceptionally high tides. The catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Florence in 2018 on the coastal communities of North Carolina serves as a sobering testament to the devastating impact of storm surges.

River Flooding: A constant threat throughout the year, occurring when water levels surge beyond riverbanks. Excessive rainfall over a long period of time or a large thunderstorms can saturate the ground causing streams and then rivers to breach their boundaries. The resultant floods are particularly perilous when the water crosses roadways and unsuspecting motorists attempt to drive through. Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway as the current is often powerful enough to wash away even a large vehicle. Another danger is due to potential contamination from bacteria and pollutants carried by the water, posing health hazards upon contact or ingestion. It’s imperative to refrain from attempting to clean up floodwater in your home unless its safety has been verified.
