What is mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in damp, warm, and humid environments. It reproduces by producing tiny spores that are invisible to the naked eye and can float through the air. Mold plays a crucial role in breaking down organic matter in nature, but it can also pose significant problems when it grows indoors.

Where does mold grow?

In indoor environments, mold can proliferate on various surfaces, including walls, ceilings, carpets, wood, and fabrics. Common indoor molds include species like Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Stachybotrys (commonly known as black mold). Mold growth indoors is typically caused by moisture intrusion, such as leaks, floods, high humidity levels, or condensation buildup.

Bathrooms are a common place where mold spores are found. This includes tiled showers, under sinks, toilets, or even on the walls. Another common place where mold hides out in the kitchen, in areas such as the fridge, under sinks, or near microwaves or stoves. Lastly, mold in basements and attics is common due to the high humidity levels, lack of light and low airflow.

Is mold actually dangerous?

Exposure to mold can cause a range of health issues, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions, allergies, or weakened immune systems. Symptoms of mold exposure may include nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, throat irritation, skin rashes, andexacerbation of asthma symptoms.

How do I prevent mold growth?

To prevent mold growth indoors, it’s essential to control moisture levels and promptly address any water damage or leaks. Proper ventilation, regular cleaning, and maintaining indoor humidity levels below 60% can help inhibit mold growth. If mold is present, professional mold remediation may be necessary to safely and effectively remove the mold and address underlying moisture issues.

What are the causes of musty smells?

While there can be several causes for musty smells in homes, the most common cause is mold. Other causes may include cigarette or cigar smoke or poor airflow. This is because growing mold releases compounds known as Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs). These compounds release that musty odor. Musty smells can occur in various rooms throughout the home, but they’re often found in moist and warm areas.

What do I do if I think I have mold?

Call a professional! Mold is not something to take lightly and proper protective equipment is always necessary with dealing with mold to ensure the protection of the home and anyone in it.
